Classical Heresies

Did the historic creeds invent Christian belief, or defend the biblical witness to God and Christ?

60-Second Answer

The historic confession holds together the oneness of God, the deity of the Son and Spirit, and their real personal distinctions.

  • A teaching can quote genuine biblical passages while neglecting others that belong to the same witness.
  • Technical language should serve the meaning of Scripture rather than replace it.
  • Mystery is not a permission for contradiction; distinguish being, person and nature before judging a claim.
ScriptureJohn 1:1 · Matthew 28:19 · Jude 1:3 · BSB

In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.

John 1:1 · BSB

Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit,

Matthew 28:19 · BSB

Beloved, although I made every effort to write to you about the salvation we share, I felt it necessary to write and urge you to contend earnestly for the faith entrusted once for all to the saints.

Jude 1:3 · BSB
Objections & replies

Does using Greek terminology make a doctrine unbiblical?

No. The question is whether the term faithfully expresses the biblical content. Explain the meaning, then test that meaning against the whole witness rather than treating the term’s origin as a decisive argument.

Were the disputed teachers not also reading the Bible?

Often they were. The issue is how their interpretation accounts for all the relevant passages. A genuine verse can be used in a synthesis that excludes another genuine part of the same witness.

Is mystery an excuse to avoid reasoning?

It should not be. Clarify the distinctions and ask whether the confession contradicts itself. The claim that God exceeds exhaustive comprehension is different from a claim that contradictory assertions should be accepted.

Why this matters

  • The identity of God and the person of Christ belong to the substance of the gospel, not merely to a vocabulary dispute.
  • Historical confession provides a way to test teachings without turning every disagreement among Christians into a charge of heresy.

Define the disagreement carefully

The word heresy should name a departure from the faith’s central confession, not function as a personal insult. Classical errors commonly preserve one biblical truth by discarding another: divine oneness at the cost of personal distinctions, or Christ’s humanity at the cost of His deity. Begin by describing the teaching accurately. Distinguish these questions from debates among Christians who share the same confession of the Triune God and the incarnate Lord.

Read the entire biblical witness

The Christian account affirms one God while receiving the testimony to the Son’s divine identity and the Spirit’s divine activity. John 1:1 and Matthew 28:19 cannot be dismissed simply because another passage emphasizes the Father. Likewise, Christ’s genuine human experience must remain alongside His divine identity. The aim is not to collect more isolated verses than an opponent, but to offer a coherent reading that gives each part of the witness its proper place.

Words can protect a meaning

Terms such as essence, person and nature are tools for explaining distinctions. Their value is judged by what they express, not simply by whether the same technical word appears in a verse. A non-biblical term may protect a biblical meaning; it may also distort it. Explain the meaning in ordinary language first. The Nicene distinction between the Son’s divine being and creaturehood serves a substantive question about who Christians worship, not a preference for Greek vocabulary.

History matters without deciding truth by power

Councils involved human conflict and political circumstances; those realities should be studied rather than hidden. They do not by themselves establish that a doctrine was invented or that its opposite was true. Examine the scriptural reasoning and the earlier confession that a council sought to clarify. Neither imperial support nor the suffering of a dissenting party proves a theological conclusion. A historical argument needs more than a story about which side possessed influence.

Development and continuity

A fuller explanation can clarify an existing claim without replacing it. The useful question is whether the new explanation preserves the identity of the faith entrusted to the church. Jude 3 and Galatians 1 direct attention to that continuity. Apply the test to one’s own preferred teachers as well as to opponents. Avoid turning this principle into an unrequested argument between Christian traditions; this study concerns the shared confession of God and Christ.

Mystery without contradiction

A contradiction affirms and denies the same thing in the same respect. The Christian confession distinguishes one divine being from three persons, and one person of Christ from His two natures. Those distinctions must be explained before the claim is called contradictory. Christians do not pretend to exhaust the reality of God; they claim to know what He has revealed. Humility about our understanding should accompany confidence in the confession, with patient explanation rather than contempt.

Speak with gentleness and respect. Examine a teaching carefully; treat the person before you with dignity.
