Jehovah’s Witnesses
How do Watchtower claims about Christ, Scripture and authority measure against the biblical testimony?
60-Second Answer
Jehovah’s Witnesses seek to worship Jehovah, honor Jesus and take Scripture seriously; begin there.
- The central disagreement is whether the Son belongs on the Creator side of the Creator–creation distinction.
- John 1, Colossians 1 and Hebrews 1 must be read together rather than decided by a single translated phrase.
- The identification of Jesus with Michael is an interpretive claim that needs scriptural support.
- An organization’s authority should be tested by the word it claims to teach.

Objections & replies
Jesus calls the Father greater; how can He be God?
Christianity distinguishes the Son’s divine identity from His incarnate mission and humble service. John’s Gospel contains both the greater statement and strong claims about the Son. The task is to explain them together, rather than removing either side of the testimony.
The word Trinity is absent from Scripture.
A term can summarize a biblical conclusion without appearing as the term itself. The question is whether one God, the deity of Father, Son and Spirit, and their real distinction are taught. Evaluate those claims before deciding whether the summary is useful.
Should I trust your translation over ours?
Do not ask for blind trust in a competing organization. Compare several translations, examine the context and consult the underlying text where needed. A disagreement should be explained openly, with reasons the reader can investigate rather than merely a demand to accept our authority.

Why this matters
- The identity of Jesus shapes worship, salvation and trust in the gospel.
- People deserve patient engagement with the sources, especially where leaving a community carries serious personal cost.
State the Watchtower case
Official Watchtower material rejects the Trinity and identifies Jesus as God’s Son rather than Almighty God. It also identifies Him with Michael. Members commonly appeal to passages where the Son is sent, prays or calls the Father greater. These are real biblical data. The Christian response must explain them alongside the passages that attribute divine identity, creation and worship to the Son.
Read John’s whole account
John 1 distinguishes the Word from the Father and attributes deity to the Word. The New World Translation’s rendering is a point of disagreement, but an isolated grammar slogan is inadequate. Examine the sentence in its context, then follow John’s account through Thomas’s confession in John 20:28. The Christian claim preserves both personal distinction and deity. It does not identify Jesus as the Father or add a second independent god.
Creator rather than a creature
Colossians 1 describes all things being created through and for the Son and places Him before all things. The Christian reading treats firstborn as supremacy and inheritance in that context. A translation or interpretation that supplies an exception for the Son must justify it from the passage. This study does not rely on unverified manuscript totals or the assumption that every supplied English word is automatically dishonest.
The Son and the angels
Hebrews 1 contrasts the Son with the angels and presents Him as receiving their worship. Watchtower’s identification with Michael should be considered against the full chapter. The question is whether the text actually identifies the Son as one of the angels or distinguishes Him from that class. Read Jude 9 and the relevant passages directly, rather than treating similar functions as conclusive identity.
The Spirit and divine authority
Acts describes the Holy Spirit speaking, willing and being lied to; those passages challenge treating Him merely as an impersonal force. Likewise, claims to be God’s uniquely reliable teaching channel require scrutiny. Christians can ask how interpretations are corrected and how members can evaluate them. Historical date claims and pastoral practices deserve properly sourced investigation, but this study does not establish its case through an unchecked list of alleged failures.
A caring conversation
A Witness may face family tension or fear when examining an outside source. Do not exploit that vulnerability. Open a passage together and allow time to read it. Ask what would count as evidence for the deity of Christ and offer your own answer to the strongest subordination texts. A gospel conversation should direct trust toward the Son and show care for the person, not celebrate disruption in their life.
Speak with gentleness and respect. Examine a teaching carefully; treat the person before you with dignity.
