New Age Spirituality

How should Christians test claims about the divine self, spiritual experience, and manifesting?

60-Second Answer

New Age spirituality is a diverse setting, not a single church with one creed. Begin with the person’s actual beliefs and experiences.

  • Christianity distinguishes the Creator from creation: closeness to God does not make the self divine.
  • A profound experience is real as an experience, but its interpretation still needs examination.
  • Claims that thought controls every outcome can place unjust blame on people who suffer. The gospel offers reconciliation and rest as God’s gift in Christ.
ScriptureGenesis 1:1 · 1 John 4:1 · Romans 5:1 · Matthew 11:28 · BSB

In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.

Genesis 1:1 · BSB

Beloved, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits to see whether they are from God. For many false prophets have gone out into the world.

1 John 4:1 · BSB

Therefore, since we have been justified through faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ,

Romans 5:1 · BSB

Come to Me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.

Matthew 11:28 · BSB
Objections & replies

My experience made me kinder and more peaceful. Why reject it?

The benefit and the experience need not be denied. The question is what they establish about ultimate reality. A helpful experience does not automatically verify every interpretation placed on it. Christians invite you to consider the person and claims of Jesus alongside that experience.

Does Christianity deny the divine presence within us?

Christianity speaks of God’s presence and the Spirit’s work in believers while preserving the distinction between God and the persons He creates and loves. Dependence on God and union with Christ do not mean that the self is the Creator.

Does criticizing manifesting deny the power of hope?

No. Hope, attention, and purposeful action can matter deeply. The objection concerns a claim of control over all circumstances and the blame it can place on victims. Christian hope depends on God’s faithfulness, not the belief that our thoughts can guarantee a desired outcome.

Why this matters

  • The longing for wonder, healing, and wholeness deserves care, especially when someone has been wounded by religious people.
  • The Christian response seeks to direct that longing toward the personal God without confusing peace of feeling with proof of a worldview.

State the range fairly

Some seekers speak of an impersonal spiritual whole; others speak personally about a loving Source, guides, or the universe. Some emphasize intuition and inner authority, others healing practices or the power of intention. These positions should not be assigned wholesale to everyone who meditates or uses a broad spiritual label. Ask what the person means and what they believe establishes it.

Creator and creation

Genesis presents God as Creator of what is not God. The Christian hope is communion between God and persons He has made, rather than discovery that the distinction was unreal. If a particular form of monism treats every distinction as ultimately illusory, ask how its account preserves genuine persons, love, and the difference between good and evil. This is a question about that metaphysics, not a denial of an adherent’s kindness.

Can the self be its own final authority?

An inward impression can be powerful and still mistaken. Conflicting intuitions cannot all establish incompatible claims merely because each feels authentic. Christian self-examination acknowledges the heart’s capacity for deception and seeks a criterion beyond personal resonance. This does not mean that emotions or experience are worthless; it means that neither should be exempt from truthfulness, correction, or moral judgment.

Test an interpretation, not someone’s honesty

A person may report deep peace, a sense of presence, or an experience of unity without lying. The further claim about its source or meaning is an interpretation. Similar experiences can receive different interpretations. In 1 John 4, spiritual claims are tested in relation to Christ; a pleasant feeling alone is not the test. Do not casually diagnose another person’s experience as a demon or a delusion.

Manifesting and the person who suffers

There is a difference between the practical effects of attention and effort and a claim that consciousness directs every external event. Ask what would count against the stronger claim. If both success and failure are always explained as alignment or hidden resistance, testing becomes difficult. More seriously, avoid implying that illness, assault, bereavement, or poverty was summoned by a sufferer’s thoughts. Christians are called to compassion, not speculative blame.

Peace received as a gift

A discipline may calm someone or help them attend to life; that benefit does not settle questions about guilt, God, or salvation. Christian peace is grounded in reconciliation through Christ, not in continually maintaining the right inner state. Jesus invites the burdened to come to Him for rest. Offer that invitation patiently, while recognizing real injuries caused by churches and taking responsibility where repentance is needed.

Speak with gentleness and respect. Examine a teaching carefully; treat the person before you with dignity.
